It’s Friday. Should I call it forgetful, frustrating, flabby or fabulous? How about all of the above! Here’s why.
Over the past year, I have noticed that my body is rebelling against me. Officially “post-menopausal,” I have moved through the time of intense hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats. I thought I was home free until I began noticing a gradual change in how I looked. What happened?? Where did that excess flab come from? I haven’t been eating differently, I still walk and take really good care of myself. But the weight between my waist and knees just kept piling on.
Hormones. It must be hormones. Trusting my intuition, I ordered a saliva test kit from an online lab. Along with the saliva test, I filled out a questionnaire that included everything from heart palpitations to leg cramps, headaches to weight gain. The results were as I expected–I am estrogen dominant, with an estrogen:progesterone ratio that is three times higher than it should be. Aha! At last, I have answers!
I took the lab results to a holistic practitioner who specializes in hormone therapy. One look over my test results and she said “yes, this screams estrogen dominance.” Then we began to discuss other ramifications of this imbalance–adrenal fatigue, thyroid problems, increased risk of breast and uterine cancer. To begin, she put me on a natural supplement to filter out the excess estrogen and an adrenal support supplement , and ordered a full blood profile. I get the results next week.
Since I went through this process, I have been more keenly aware of what is happening with my body. I notice that I have had less energy at night, more headaches, frequent heart palpitations and last week even had a couple of days of “spotting.” A few days ago, I woke up at 4:45 AM with a splitting headache and excruciating leg cramps, which I am also attributing to the estrogen imbalance. If I had not been so “clued in” to the hormone issue, I’m not sure I would have tied all these symptoms together. The moral of this story: be AWARE of your body!!
According to the site Alternative HormoneSolutions.ca, if you have five or more of these symptoms, you may have estrogen dominance. I have 13.

The lesson for all of us– please pay attention to your body! If you are experiencing many of the above symptoms, talk to your doctor! Don’t just assume that it’s part of life now that you are post- or peri-menopausal.
Now I can say with confidence, “It’s just the hormones.”
